Doune buttercup cafe1/23/2024 ![]() ![]() I started by saying the cafe was busy, but that’s no excuse for overpriced, underwhelming fare. And for £3.20, my husbands coffee was cold. ![]() I was very disappointed, but when I looked at the receipt on arriving home to check the cost of the boring cheese sandwich, I was actually quite disgusted to discover it had cost me £7.90. No side salad, crisps or the usual trimmings you might expect. What arrived was two doorsteps of bread with some grated cheese, carrot and lettuce in between. I was looking for a vegetarian sandwich and asked for cheese. It certainly looked that way and for £5.50, something more substantial was expected. Dad had the soup, which he described as ‘watery’. My husband had an open chicken sandwich topped with bacon which he enjoyed. With a wheelchair and two small dogs it was also an easier option, although the cafe is dog friendly. Thankfully, I had the foresight to book and was guided to a table in the light, bright dining room at the back.We visited on Sunday at lunchtime and the cafe was very busy so we sat outside. Owing to its impressive reputation for great food, it is always filled with happy customers. The cafe is a small, well maintained affair, which opens up into a courtyard and additional dining room at the back. ![]() The Buttercup Cafe sits in the pretty Doune main street and inside is a hive of activity. By now, while my mind was focused on the great outdoors, my stomach was thinking about the great indoors. So fascinated was I by the beautiful natural world, that I completely lost track of time. The blue sky was dotted with red kite (the birds, not the children’s toys), clearly attracted to the nearby Argaty Red Kite Centre for feeding time. It was a gloriously sunny day, which, after the long, dreary winter, was balm for the soul. My walk took me to the glorious rolling hills behind Doune in Perthshire. I wish I could pretend to be the original author of this profound quote but John Muir, the famous Scottish-born naturalist, captured beautifully a precise feeling of being enthralled by nature. “I only went out for a walk, and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.” Copy link A decentered black square over a white square.
